Covid-19 relief talks are starting to see progress, negotiators say

Lawyers on Saturday announced progress on a massive coronavirus relief bill, as political pressure raises funds to restore the প্রতি 600-a-week complementary unemployment benefit and send funds to reopen schools.

“This was our longest meeting and it was more fruitful than other meetings,” said Chuck Schumer, senior minority leader, D-NY, who was part of the rare weekend session. “We’re not very close yet, but it was a productive discussion – now everyone knows where they are.”

After a three-hour meeting with Treasury Secretary Steven Munuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Schumacher spoke to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California.

Democratic leaders are eager for a broader deal, as are top Republicans such as President Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Senate Majority Leader. But perhaps half of the Senate Republicans, mostly conservatives, and those who do not face a tough race this fall will probably oppose any deal.

There has been little progress in previous discussions and Saturday’s cautious optimism breaks out of bizarre personal assessments among GOP negotiators. The administration is willing to extend the recently expired 600 unemployment benefits at least in the short term, but is leaning towards other democratic demands such as support for state and local governments, food stamp increases and assistance to tenants and homeowners.

Pelosi mentioned food aid and funding for voting in the mail after the discussion session ended. He and Suma appeared to be more enthusiastic than they were after the previous meeting

“We need to get rid of this virus so that we can open our economy, open schools safely, and do so without harming American workers,” Pelosi said.

Munuchin says restoring the সুবিধা 600 complementary unemployment benefit is critically important to Trump.

“We’re still a long way off and I don’t want to recommend that any deal is imminent because that’s not it,” the Meadows later said. “There’s still enough difference, but we’ve made good progress.”

The additional unemployment benefit officially closed on Friday, and Democrats have made it clear they will not extend it without securing other relief priorities. Unemployment aid negotiators will be brought back the way they agreed – but old state systems can take weeks to recoup benefits.

Republicans in the Senate have been fighting to bring back the $ 600 benefit, saying it must be reduced so that people do not work more than unemployment if they return to work. But as the benefits expire, their solution weakens, and Trump suddenly lowers their position by hinting that he wants to keep $ 600 in full.

On Friday, Trump used Twitter to explicitly extend the payment 600 payment deadline and criticize the count.

Washington’s top power players agree that Congress should release more relief in the coming days and weeks. The Weekly 600 Unemployment Benefit is a new সরাসরি 1,200 direct payment to most Americans, and several hundred billion dollars, among other things, for state, business, and other assistance to the poor.

Democrats hold the hand of strong negotiations – exploiting GOP divisions – and they are expected to provide the required amount of votes.

The COVID package will be the fifth legal response to the epidemic and could be the last before the November election. The only other law passed on the agenda is the measure of stopgap spending which should go ahead in September.

Since May, Republicans controlling the Senate have put a “break” on relief talks in a strategy aimed at lowering its price tag. But when the epidemic returned in the summer – and the bone-crushing party’s negotiating position within the GOP diminished – Republicans showed some more flexibility.

Even with signs of progress in the discussion, the list of items for discussion has been fixed.

A must-have item for McConnell is the ield of liability from lawsuits for businesses, schools and charities that re-emerged as soon as the epidemic broke out. The GOP’s business associates are strong supporters, but the country’s judicial lawyers hold enough clout in the opposition. A compromise is probably a final but necessary part of the final agreement.

Democrats’ priority is to increase the benefits of food stamps. Republicans have added 20 20 billion to agribusiness but their $ 1 trillion proposal does not include any increase for food stamp benefits. Pasture played a role in the increase in food treatment during the negotiations of the 2 2 trillion relief bill in March, but Pelosi seems determined. Many economists say food stamps have risen, providing immediate injection of demand into the economy as well as the fight against growing poverty.

Food aid was the first item Pelosi mentioned in a letter to the Democrats for the purpose of informing them of their progress.

“It’s a completely different kind of discussion, because that’s what’s at stake. Millions of children are food insecure, millions of families are at risk of eviction, and 10 million Americans applied for insurance in the nineteenth week, ”Pelosi said.
